Ramenskii munitsipal’nyi istoriko-khudozhestvennyi muzei (Ramensk Municipal Historical and Art Museum)

Moscow: Belyi gorod, 2006. sewn cl. The introduction offers a good case history of the optimism and precariousness of creating local museums in the Soviet period. Blessed with many works of art from private collections nationalized after the 1917 revolution, Ramensk Museum had a good start in the 1920s; however, an unsafe location for the collection led to early instances of theft; World War II took a further toll on the collection: informed of the Nazi advance when it was too late to evacuate, museum workers buried paintings not a few of which were irremediably damaged; and after the war while the museum building was being renovated hundreds of the best works were allocated to Moscow museums, but never reached their destination. 64 pp., 9 x 11 ins., 5 b-&-w illus., 102 color, sewn cl., Rus.
