St. Petersburg: Muzei istorii religii, 2013. pb. This catalogue of the Museum of the History of Religion publishes rarely seen paintings and drawings by a major artist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Viktor Vasnetsov’s extraordinary career ran through critical realism, monumental painting in sync with the Russian Revival, and religious art that was neither archaically medieval nor academic and westernized. He managed to render forms of medieval icon-painting in a modernist style, in particular, the national romanticism trend of Art Nouveau. His subjects are lyrical and elements of folk art form part of the ornament. The works in the Museum of the History of Religion were done for St. Vladimir’s Cathedral in Kyiv and the Church of St. George commissioned by Iu. S. Nechaev Maltsev for the village of Gus. Vasnetsov inspired other artists of the early twentieth century, and a sampling of their works also appear in this collection catalogue. The majority of works are published here for the first time. 115 p., approx. 80 color and b/w illus. Rus. With summary in ENGLISH. Item #1167
