This catalogue of an exhibition at Abramtsevo achieves two purposes: first, it publishes works by a major Russian artist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the figure who, transforming his own work from the nineteenth-century realist canon to innovative modernist forms, was instrumental in moving Russian art into the twentieth century; second, it recreates through archival photos, correspondence, and recollections the singular atmosphere so fertile for Russian art that prevailed at Savva Mamontov’s country home of Abramtsevo. Some works were painted or conceived at Abramtsevo; others were commissioned by Mamontov; still others take as their subject the setting of Abramtsevo.
