Theories of abstract art and abstract works such as suprematism and constructiivism were concurrent with other styles that were figurative but also strikingly experimental. Petrov-Vodkin's painting exemplifies art with recognizable subjects but variants of style at variance with realism. The way he altered perspective, the intense expressions on faces in his portraits suggest parallels with icon-painting, and the themes of the city, workplace, and war stem from twentieth-century concerns.
