This catalogue has been the life work of the author who undertook in the 1960s a systematic and scholarly description of the Pushkin Museum’s collection of Japanese prints. The collection lacks early works of the seventeenth century, but has such variety and richness for the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that each phase of the art’s development can be followed and works by all major artists seen. Cataloguing the collection entailed painstaking work and careful consultation to distinguish original and early prints from later ones and counterfeit ones, to establish authorship and date, and to gloss the lore, history, and religion behind the imagery. The introduction characterizes the collection and notes how it was formed (one distinction is that the principal collector, S. N. Kitaev, a Russian naval officer, acquired most works in Japan in the late nineteenth century).
