The author uses archival documents to trace the career of the architect Alexander Kokorinov (1726-72), who prepared the way for the flourishing of neoclassical architecture in Russia.  He achieved fame for his design of the ensemble of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, where he taught from its founding in the late 1750s to his death.
