Moscow: Institut realisticheskogo iskusstva, 2015. Sewn pb. Scholars afrom Italy and Russia curated the exhibition on which this catalogue was based, and works of paiting and graphic art from 14 Russian museums, galleries, and private collections show many aspects of a rich modernist theme—the ttechnology of movement, the romance of speed, the dynamic achievements of the twentieth century, when horsepower became passé and man's ability through technnology to overcome the obstacles of space seemed unlimited. Especially in the Soviet Union, where industrialization and overcoming the backwardness of the past, were reuqired subjects, the visual harvest was immense. Soviet artists of various strains — avant-garde, socialist realism, severe realism — and other styles created indelible visual records of the mood. Labas, Samokhvalov, Pimenov, Deineka, Salakhov, Nisskii are among the major artists whose works are publised here. The authors identify antecendents and parallels in the art of earlier periods such as the artistic association Circle of Artists (Krug khudozhnikov) and Bubnovyi valet (Jack of Diamonds). 191 p., 27 cm, approx., 80 color illus., Rus.
