This catalogue of a Hermitage exhibition uses paintings, drawings, watercolors and archival photographs to show how works of sculpture figured in the interior design of palaces in the Russian imperial capital. Also illustrated are many of the the works of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sculpture primarily by Italian and German sculptors (e.g., Antonio Canova, Rinaldo Rinaldi, Christian Daniel Rauch, Emil Wolff) now in the Hermitage collection but originally adorning palace interiors. The appreciation of sculpture came late to Russia — it was not among the kinds of art fostered by the Eastern Orthodox Church — the first collection being formed by Peter the Great in the eighteenth century. In the late eighteenth and nineteenth Russian collectors and art patrons, led by the imperial family, made up for lost time, actively seeking Western European works and those of the new school of secular Russian sculptors. The famous Summer Gardens and the suburban palaces of St. Petersburg set the tone for the widespread use of sculpture in the design of mansion and palace interiors.
