Russkii modern (Russian Art Nouveau)

Moscow: Rip-kholding, 2014 (text first published 1990). Sewn cl. In the 1890s and first years of the twentieth century the style that had roots in the Arts and Crafts movement in England and parallels in France (art nouveau) and Germany (Jugend Stil) took on a distinct northern European form and flourished in Russia. The emphasis on decoration in architecture meant that architects frequently worked with painters and sculptors to create ensembles in which the doorways, windows, gables, staircases, ceilings, forms of lighting, and fireplaces meshed with the overall form of the building. The excellent illustrations show how the style blurred the boundary between the applied arts and fine arts. 351 p., approx. 300 color and b/w illus., Rus. Item #1683
