Moscow: Muzei izobrazitel'nykh iskusstv im. A.S. Pushkina, 2001. Sewn cl. This is the first attempt to systematically catalogue virtually all the Netherlandish, Flemish, and Dutch drawings in the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The author gives the history of the collection from its beginnings in the Moscow Rumiantsev Museum in the 1860s to recent acquisitions. He underscores the role of individual collectors whose acumen in choosing works of high quality and generosity in donating their collections created the museum’s department of Western European drawing: K. I. Riumin (1873), P. D. Dolgorukov (1906), N. S. Mosolov (1914), N. V. Basnin (1918), A. A. Sidorov (1968), I. S. Zil’bershtein (1986). Private collections nationalized after the 1917 revolution and transfers of works from the Hermitage and Shtiglits Institute also enriched the collection. The author notes that though the collection at the State Pushkin Museum has gaps, it is sufficiently rich to show the development of drawing in the Netherlands, Flanders, and Holland and to offer a good sampling of the most important artists’ work. 424 pp., 9 x 10 1/2 ins., 627 b-&-w illus., sewn cl., Rus. with artists’ names, bibliography in ENGLISH.
