St. Petersburg: Herm, 2006. Sewn pb. Abbot Filippo Farsetti collected works by Italian sculptors of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century (esp. Roman baroque statues) and copies from ancient sculpture. The Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg acquired Farsetti’s collection during the reign of Emperor Paul, who had seen it when visiting Italy as grand duke in 1782. Now at the Hermitage, these works in marble, bronze, and terracotta (all beautifully illustrated) are here catalogued and beautifully illustrated. The author dilates on the history of the collection in Italy and Russia, and its pedagogical value to generations of sculptors both in Italy, where Farsetti opened the collection to visitors, and in Russia at the Academy. 256 pp., 8 3/8 x 11 1/2 ins., 102 b-&-w illus., 145 color, sewn pb., Rus. with title page and summary in Italian.
