St. Petersburg: K Tubllina, 2009. Sewn cl. These photos show the military aspects of defending Leningrad during the blockade — bunkers around monuments, artillery in front of the university, a sniper being rewarded, German prisoners on Nevskii Prospect, trucks evacuating emaciated Leningraders across the frozen trail of Lake Ladoga, the Road of Life, but especially vivid and revealing are the photographs of everyday life: a family of three generations of women on a walk all gaunt and frail, inventorying cartons of American bacon, fetching water from cracks in the ice, dragging off the dead. Several archives and private collections provided the visual and written documents published here. The compiler has selected ones that give the raw face of life in besieged Leningrad. The quality of the reproductions and the large format give as strong a sense as a book can of the realities of that period. 303 p., 31 cm, approx. 300 b/w illus., Rus. and ENGLISH. Item #1952
