St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2009. Sewn cl. This exhibition catalogue of the Russian Museum deals with two themes essential to European art history: the discovery and propagation outside Russia of Russian painters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many of whose works Diagilev exhibited in Paris Salon d'automne in 1906. His most dazzling success was publicizing artists working in a modernist vein who learned from and added to the experiments of Western European artists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — Larionov and Vrubel', Benois and Dobuzhinskii, Bakst and Somov, Serov and Elena Polenova, Bilibin and Trubetskoi, to name a few. Many of them would go on to work with him in he Ballets russes and Saisons russes as set and costume designers. Diagilev managed to acquaint Western Europe with Russian art and show Russians how significant was their artistic heritage and how talented were their contemporaries. 255 p., 32 cm, approx. 200 color, Rus.
