Pastel’ iz sobraniia Russkogo muzeia (Pastels from the Collection of the Russian Museum)

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2009. Sewn cl. Western European artists brought the technique of pastel painting to Russia in the eighteenth century, and this catalogue includes works by French and German artists working in Russia. By the early nineteenth century A. Orlovskii’s pastels of archers and horsemen of the Caucasus Mts. and P. Sokolov’s portraits established a place in Russian art for the pastel. The authors follow the career of the genre for the following two centuries, its heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, seen in I. Levitan’s landscapes and in works by artists of the World of Art circle such as A. Benois, L. Bakst, and K. Somov. Other twentieth-century artists who used the pastel successfully were Z. Serebriakova and A. Kaplan. Beautifully illustrated with full-page plates, the catalogue publishes many works for the first time. 144 pp., 9 x 12 ins., 145 color illus., sewn cl., Rus. Item #1973
