The authors follow the career of the genre for the following two centuries, its heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, seen in I. Levitan’s landscapes and in works by artists of the World of Art circle such as A. Benois, L. Bakst, and K. Somov. Other twentieth-century artists who used the pastel successfully were Z.
