Published in this Russian Museum exhibition catalogue are portraits of the grand duchess and her circle, paintings and photographs of the palace as a residence, and a concise biography of Elena Pavlovna, who lived in Russia during three reigns, Alexander I, Nikolai I, and Alexander II. Marriages between German royalty and the Russian imperial family were frequent. The subject of this exhibition catalogue is the life of Princess Charlotte of Wurtemburg, who became in marriage to Mikhail Pavlovich, younger son of Emperor Paul, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. Their home was one of St. Petersburg’s grandest palaces, the Michael Palace built by Carl Rossi, Elena Pavlovna set the tone for court events and helped shape the décor and art collections of the palace, which at the end of the nineteenth century became the Alexander III (later the State Russian) Museum.
