Sil'vestr Shchedrin i shkola Pozillipo (Sil'vestr Shchedrin and the Pozillipo School)

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2016. Sewn cl. The name of the school of landscape painters inspired by the environs of Naples comes from Pozillipo Hill in the southwest part of contemporary Naples, which is thought to have the most beautiful view of the city, Mt. Vesuvius, and the bay. At first it had derogatory connotations, as there was a demand for routine scenes to be sold to tourists, but it earned a worthy place among European styles of landscape—the Russian painter Sylvester Shchedrin did serious and original works in a luminous style. Published in this Russian Museum catalogue in addition to Shchedrin's works are those by the Dutch painter Antonie Sminck van Pitloo, and the Italians Gigante Giaconto and the Carelli, a family of Neapolitan painters. Most works date to the 1820s and 1830s. 143 p., approx. 80 color illus., Rus. Item #1991
