St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2010. sewn cl. The serene and self-possessed countenances of Levitskii’s portraits of girls and women are reminiscent of Gainsborough's and Reynolds's English ladies. In this catalogue the authors present their research on the seven works Levitskii did in the 1770s of students of Smolnyi Institute (Smolianki), the women's school founded by Catherine the Great and reflecting the optimistic philosophy of the Enlightenment. A chapter on the technology of restoration at the Russian Museum explains how the damage of time can be corrected, what improper methods have been used in past eras, what limitations restorers face today, and process of restoration says about the artist’s methods. The last chapter publishes portraits from private collections in Europe and North America, which thanks to new research are for the first time attributed to Levitskii. The many details bring out the subteties of the painter's technique. 86 p., 10 x 13 ins., 11 b-&-w illus., 50 color, Rus. Item #2055
