Batushkina armiia: Gatchinskie voiska velikogo kniazia Pavla Petrovicha (Father’s Army: Gatchina Troops of Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich)

St. Petersburg: Galereia, 2008. saddle-stitched. Drawings, paintings, and works of decorative art from the collections of the museum at Gatchina illustrate a colorful and not very well known chapter of Russian eighteenth-century history: the military force of approximately two and half thousand troops assigned by Catherine the Great to her son Paul. He modeled the uniforms and training of his forces on Friedrich II’s Prussian army, and though Catherine referred contemptuously to her son’s military force as “Father’s troops” (Batushkina armiia), Paul’s military regimen became the basis of later reforms of the imperial army as a whole. 36 pp., 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 ins. 7 b-&-w illus., 37 color, Rus.
