Russkie sady XVIII – pervaia polovina XIX veka (Russian Gardens of the 18th c. and First Half of the 19th c.)

Moscow: Art-Rodnik, 2007. sewn. cl. The author examines written and visual sources of traditional Russian gardens, especially those of monasteries, and then looks at the renowned gardens of the palace ensembles outside St. Petersburg of the Russian imperial family and their court—Peterhof, Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Oranienbaum, Gatchina, Strel’na—and those outside Moscow, Kuskovo and Ostankino of the Sheremetovs, and the Yusupovs’ Arkhangel’skoe. Gardens on provincial estates, more difficult to study from neglect during the Soviet years and from their often being the work of the owners rather than architects who would have left plans, also demonstrate how big a part the garden played as a branch of art and as a necessary part of life for the gentry. The author seeks to define the characteristics of Russian gardens as compared with those of Western Europe in choice of plants, style of layout, and engineering, architectural, and sculptural enhancements (e.g., fountains, pavilions, follies, statuary). Chapters cover the successive styles of the period: baroque, neoclassical, and romantic. The generous format and high quality of the photography and printing enhance the value of the book as a reference on the subject. 255 pp., 9 1/2 x 12 ins., Rus. Series: Sady mira. Item #2064
