Usol'e: Architectural Heritage in Photographs / Usol’e: arkhitekturnoe nasledie v fotografiiakh

Moscow: Tri kvadrata, 2012. The latest edition in the series that shows works of architecture that very few ever see. Usol’e was one of the centers of the Stroganovs’ salt industry in the Ural Mountian region. From the sixteenth century the family not only developed resources but settled areas of Russia beyond the reach of Moscow. As such, they took on all the responsibilities of a sovereign, the first of which was the founding, construction, and ornamentation of churches. Also famed for their decorative arts workshops, the Stroganovs in no way gave short shrift to their architectural projects, and many have the scale and richness of decoration that one would expect only in a major city. Also distinctive is much of the domestic architecture: brightly colored façades set off by whitewashed ornate window frames and cornices. As in other titles of this series, the author introduces the plates by outlining the history of the area and pointing out its architectural significance. Several full-page illustrations of iconostasis enrich the architectural history. 112 pp., 8 x 11 ins., approx. 100 b-&-w illus., 35 color illus., sewn cl., Rus. and ENGLISH, 2012, Series: Discovering Russia (Otkryvaia Rossiiu).
