St. Petersburg: Herm, 2016. Sewn cl. These works predominantly from Germany were often found in the living chambers of the emperor and his family in the Winter Palace. Emperor Paul's wife had works by the celebrated Stuttgart sculptor Johann Heinrich von Dannecker, and in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, a strong period of German sculpture, Nicholas I added works by Christian Daniel Rauch, the Wichmann brothers, Emil Wolff, and Ludwig von Schwanthaler. The collection was enriched after the 1917 revolution by confiscation of private collections, and again after World War II, when the Museum of Modern Western Art was closed, the Hermitage receiving works by Fritz Behn, Gustav Wolff. Herbert Garbe, Max Klinger, and Franz von Stuck. As the collection depended on the tastes of successive emperors, it is not a full survey of German sculpture of the period, though the first half of the nineteenth century has enough of a variety to show the artistic careers of major German sculptors. A sprinkling of works from Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark (notably 14 works by Bertel Thorvaldsen), Sweden, and Finland are also published here. 334 p., approx. 300 color, Rus. with title page, introduction, artists' names in E.
