Chasovoe iskusstvo: chasy XVI – XVII vekov v sobranii Ermitazha (Clockmaking: perfect timing. Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century clocks and watches in the Hermitage collection)

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2016. Sewn pb. Clocks in the Hermitage from the first third of the sixteenth century show that the intricate mechanisms of the new inventions ( using springs instead of weights, for example) were conceived not as mere tools for measuring time but as fine works of applied art: engraving on the housing, allegorical reliefs, sculptural figurines, beautifully designed lettering on clockfaces. The excellent illustrations including many details  — one clock may be shown with three, four, or five facets of its design — bring out the artistic qualities of the Hermitage's collection. The majority of works originate in Western Europe, esp. Germany, France and England. The authors point out which themes of decoration recur and parallels with other arts such as the baroque style. They comment on the work of the best clockmakers of the period, many of whom are represented in the collection. 278 p. , 25 cm, approx. 300 color, Rus. with title page and summary in ENGLISH.
