Wassilly Kandinsky and Russia / Vasilii Kandinskii i Rossiia

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2016. Sewn cl. For the 150th anniversary of Kandinskii's birth the Russian Museum has mustered paintings from 18 museums and 7 private collections to show the breadth of Kandinskii's work and seek its relation to the Russian milieu, which inspired him in popular prints, shop signs, icons, and folk art. The catalogue juxtaposes works by Kandinskii with those by his contemporaries in Russia and Germany such as Marianne von Werefkin, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc, Alexij von Jawlensky (Aleksei Iavlenskii), Nikolai Kulbin, Aristarkh Lentulov, and David Burliuk. The catalogue spans the period when Kandinskii was moving from figurative to abstract painting, and works done around 1911 seem to show his rethinking of his art. A final section of the catalogue publishes porcelain designs, drawings, and watercolors by Kandinskii. An appendix sketches the biographies of Russian and Western European artists, Kandinskii's contemporaries, with whom he had a kinship in experimentation. The combination of masterpieces and seldom seen early works from sundry collections enhances the value of the catalogue. 174 p., 32 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. or ENGLISH 174 p., 32 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. or ENGLISH.
