Aleksandr Labas

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2012. Born in 1900 Labas matured as an artist at the beginning of the Soviet regime. Unlike many other artists whose careers straddled Imperial Russia and Soviet Russia and who were often ambivalent about the new era, Labas felt at home in the Soviet Union and was enthralled with modernization and focused in his works on its most salient manifestations. This Russian Museum exhibition catalogue publishes paintings and drawings from fourteen museums of the 1920s and 30s, when Labas was at the peak of his originality. They range from a vivid portrait of Tatlin to futuristic cityscapes in which the skies are teeming with different kinds of flying machines. The visual material, reproduced in large format and much of it unfamiliar, provides a good basis for a new chapter in the history of avant-garde and early Soviet art. 168 pp., 12 x 11 3/4 ins., 165 color illus., sewn cl., Rus. or ENGLISH, 2012, Item #2139
