Fedor Rokotov: zhizn' i tvorchestvo (Fedor Spetanovich Rokotov: His life and works)

St. Petersburg: Ego, 2008. sewn cl. Based on twenty-five years of archival research and study of individual paintings, this study of one of Russia’s first great secular painters (b. 1736, d. 1808) enables us to understand not only the development and career of one artist, but the formation of a school of Russian art in the eighteenth century. Indebted to foreign artists for instruction in technical methods, Russian painters during the eighteenth century attained the professional level of Western European painters, and when endowed as in the case of Rokotov with powerful natural talent became artists on a par with their contemporaries in the West. Another theme is the education of artists in private studios and the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, where Rokotov became one the first Russian instructors. The monograph concludes with a report on various technological methods used to research Rokotov’s paintings as published in 1998 by S. V. Rimskaia-Korsakova. A catalogue of 227 works with corrected dating and revised attributions strengthens the book as a source, as do a chronicle of exhibitions and a bibliography. 349 p., 7 x 9 ¼ ins., 191 b-&-w illus., 170 color, Rus.
