Malakhitovyi zal Zimnego dvortsa (The Malachite Chamber of the Winter Palace)

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2005. Saddle-stitched. In this number of the series Rooms and Buildings of the Hermitage the author shows off the a masterpiece of interior design by the architect Alexander Briullov undertaken in 1938 after a fire destroyed many of the interiors of the Winter Palace. Briullov trained with Zakharov and Voronikhin at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and had a study trip to several European countries. Receiving the commission from Nicholas I to restore the imperial family's living quarters in the Winter Palace, Briullov used the celebrated green stone of the Urals to form a perfect ensemble using malachite for both architectural elements such as pilasters and doorways and works of decorative art like vases, chandeliers, and tables. It was the room perhaps from the color of the stone where the empress Alexandra Fedorovna relaxed from the pressures of state and family. 45 p., 6 x 9 ins., 9 b-&-w illus., 34 color, Rus.
