Bol’shaia tserkov’ Zimnego dvortsa (The Large Church of the Winter Palace)

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2009. sewn pb. Today’s Hermitage Museum grew out of the palace built for the Russian imperial family in the 1750s, an essential element of which was the church that Rastrelli designed within the palace, its dome and cross visible above the palace's roof line. In the gilded and carved details of its walls and iconostasis, the Hermitage’s Large Church typifies the baroque as that style took shape in Russia. Russian, Italian, and French painters worked side by side on the wall paintings and icons, and the tension between Russian Orthodox styles and those of Western Europe seems to have led to a original hybrid interpretation. During the restoration after the fire of 1838 Emperor Nicholas I had Vasilii Stasov rebuild according to original designs, but for the wall paintings and icons Stasov enlisted artists as Karl Briullov, Petr Basin, and Fedor Bruni whose style reflected the passage of almost a century since the original. Prototypes or analogies in Western European art are identified. The author uses many illustrations, photographs, paintings, and drawings, to show the distinctive aspects of the interior, the art that adorns it, and the events such as crownings and christenings that took place there. 77 p., 6 1/2 x 9 1/4 ins., approx. 100 color and b/w illus., Rus.
