Pozdnii Mashkov: zhivopis' iz rossiiskikh muzeev i chastnykh kollektsii / Late Mashkov: paintings from Russian museums and private collections

St. Petersburg: In Artibus, 2016. Sewn pb. This catalogue of an exhibition shows a new and healthy side of Russian art book publishing: galleries are mustering resources to publish catalogues of exhibitions which though not of museum extent yet warrant a visual and written record. Mashkov studied in the early years of the twentieth century with Leonid Pasternak, Konstantin Korovin, and Valentin Serov. He exhibited in the Jack of Diamonds shows and then became associated with the World of Art. After the 1917 revolution he taught at VKhuTeMas. The paintings vary from his favorite genre of still-life to buxom farm women among their fields and crops; a commission for wall paintings in the Hotel Moscow shows Mashkov's skill at monumental painting: scenes of port towns, resorts, and posh new metro stations. An appendix reproduces samples of his drawing albums. Also published are writings by Mashkov and his contemporaries on his work and the art of the period. 150 p., approx. 100 color a d b/w illus., Rus. and ENGLISH. Item #2321
