St. Petersburg: Muzei istorii Religii, 2016. Sewn pb. The best medalists of the eighteenth century combined the subtleties of painted portraiture with the force and texture of sculpture. This collection catalogue of the Museum of the History of Religion catalogues ninety-four works by both Western-European and Russian artists. Enamored of ancient art, its cameos and coins, Catherine the Great sought a similar way to commemorate the most notable figures of Russian history. As a German who took the throne forcibly from her husband Peter III, legitimate heir of the Romanov dynasty, she understood the need to establish her legitimacy, and one way of doing so was to embrace her new homeland and emphasize what she perceived as glorious episodes of its history. She chose the major rulers of the earliest period of Rus' — Riurik, Igor, Sviatoslav, and Iaropolk — and created a visual chronicle of their deeds in medal art. Thanks to collaboration between the Museum and Hermitage's numismatics department, this catalogue publishes the full set of medals that Catherine commissioned. She enlisted for the work some of the best European medalists, and many works are exemplary forms of the genre. The medalists T. I. Ivanov and S. Iu. Iudin also attained a high level of virtuosity for a young Russian school of medalists.  The medals show interiors, landscapes, battle scenes, and portraiture skillfully executed in an art that demands the skills of sculpture and draftsmanship.  90p., 23 cm, approx. 70 color illus., Rus.
