Books date to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and are valuable as examples of early printed book art — some books show elegantly designed miniatures and colorful intricate ornamental borders and headpieces. They are also historical sources since the inscriptions offer evidence on how widespread books were in Russia: — some belonged to upper echelon of society such as tsars, grand dukes, and boyars; others were the property of merchants, and even peasants — and what people were interested in: liturgical books of all kinds (bibles, breviaries, psalteries) naturally, but also books on secular subjects such as grammar and law.
