St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2017. Sewn cl. Catherine the Great and Emperor Paul were intimate with Western European culture, and the artists they invited to Russia and patronized were major talents of the second half of the eighteenth century. Catherine recruited Quarenghi, Cameron, Gonzago, and Rinaldi as builders and designers, and Paul commissioned works paintings for his palace at Pavlovsk from Hubert Robert. In the same vein were the paintings of Gerard Delabarte: this Russian Museum exhibition catalogue show the spectrum of his abilities from precise cityscapes reminiscent of Canaletto, to Romantic landscapes similar to Robert, and genre scenes of typical aspects of Russian life from group bathing to sledding by the walls of the Kremlin. The many two-page spreads nicely reproduced by the printer in Italy convey the virtuosity of Delabarte's style. 104 p., 32 cm, approx. 100 color illus., Rus. Item #2548
