Pavel Filonov hasn't the same fame of some of the other artists of the Russian avant-garde, yet as this major show at the Russian Museum demonstrates, both stylistically and ideologically Filonov's art was revolutionary and a match for any artist in original technique and striking imagery. It is his theory of universal flowering that gives the exhibition and catalogue its title, but the works published here (paintings, drawings, prints, photographs) were created by many artists the years just before and after the revolution of 1917, when ideals were possible and no one foresaw Stalinism. Together they depict the pre-revolutionary world, where the humble people are oppressed, and acclaim the post-revolutionary world in which workers, peasants and soldiers are the new elite.
