The catalogue of an exhibition at the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg publishes, often for the first time, paintings, drawings, posters, and archival photos showing the ways in which the 1917 revolution was celebrated in public art — banners draped from public buildings, slogans festooned along bridges, portraits and effigies of political leaders mounted on dais. The Bolsheviks inherited from the tsars the tradition of adorning the city festively to mark historical events, but they perceived from the beginning with Lenin's decree on monumental public art dating to 12 April 1918 "On the Monuments of the Republic" that they were doing something more serious than celebrating or commemorating: they were using a grand medium, the buildings, streets, lampposts, train cars, and bridges, to drive home the transformation of the country wrought by the revolution. And they enlisted many first-rate artists for the purpose such as N. I. Al'tman, B. D. Baranov-Rossiné, I. I. Brodskii, M. D. Dobuzhinskii, B. M. Kustodiev, K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, and S. V.
