This catalogue of an exhibition at the Museum of the Orient (Muzei Vostoka) in Moscow publishes an extraordinary mélange of cultures captured during a brief period of the 1920s and early 30s, when art in the USSR was using the experimental forms of modernism to inspire the peoples outside European Russia. The techniques may derive from the art schools of Petrograd and Moscow such as KhuTeMas, but the subjects and scenes are distinctly Central Asian such as colorful tunics as costume, yurts and clay buildings as housing, camels and mules as means of transport, melons as local food.
