As the burial place of grand dukes and tsars, whom icon-painters portray in many of the icons. Remarkable is the iconostasis of 1679–81, which has a complex icon of the Archangel Michael from the original Archangel Cathedral of the fourteenth century. Icons that form part of tombs are unique examples of memorial art of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. About two-thirds of works date to the seventeenth century or earlier.
