Moscow: Fond Mardzhani, 2013. Sewn cl. Among the great reforms in Russia of the 1860s under Alexander II the one granting civic equality had a beneficent effect on the Islamic peoples of the empire. One way in which the Tartar urban population expressed their new status and the dignity of their Islamic faith was the publication of the shamail. The word in Arabic means something like character or dignity, and in Persian portrait or holy image. As a genre of print art the shamail flourished in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They combined imagery and words to express ethical ideals and are thus a vital part of Islamic visual culture while their verbal content encapsulates the world view of the Islamic populations of southern Russian Empire such as Kazan, Orenberg, and Ufa. Published here with detailed commentary and high-quality color plates are over 100 works from the collection of the Mardjani Foundation in Moscow. 223 p., 30 cm, approx. 150 color illus., Rus. with catalogue in ENGLISH.
