Ernest Karlovich Lipgart ob Ispanii i ispanskoi zhivopisi (Ernest Karlovich Liphart: on Spain and Spanish painting)

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2017. Sewn cl. This is a history of art history, in particular, how the Hermitage's great collection of Spanish painting became part of world scholarship through collaboration with Western European specialists, continuous study, and publication, all of which was initiated and furthered by the curator of the painting collection in the early twentieth century. Liphart was of Baltic German descent and passed about half his life in Spain and Italy, where he trained as a painter, studying art collections and associating with historians of art. After settling in St. Petersburg, he was familiar with the capital's rich private collections and was the first to publish a scholarly catalogue of the Hermitage's Italian and Spanish paintings (1912). He stayed at the Hermitage after the 1917 revolution and was instrumental in cataloguing the many new paintings received from nationalized private collections. An appendix tabulates 204 works of Spanish painting showing how their attributions and iconography were clarified in catalogues of different years. 254 p., 25 cm, approx. 60 color illus., Rus. with summary, title page and table of contents in ENGLISH.
