Moscow: Buksmart, 2014. Sewn cl. This book publishes a novella by the painter who was a major figure in the Jack of Diamonds exhibition and and ten articles based on archival research in which the authors look at Mashkov not only as an artist but as an activist and reformer. The subject of Mashkov's story is the social transformation of his native Cossack village after the 1917 revolution. Mashkov himself worked in Mikhailovskaia to turn it into a model socialist village. The last section of the book focuses on Mashkov's art in the 1930s and compares it with his earlier work. The irony of an artist doomed to accept commissions from the Soviet regime comes forth in his depiction of a cornucopia of fruits, grans, and delicacies seeming to flow from the hammer and sickle emblem even as the country was experiencing famine in the early 1930s. 351 pages, 27 cm, 20 color and b/w illustrations, Rus.
