St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2018. Sewn cl. This catalogue of an exhibition of the contemporary art branch of the Russian Museum, the Ludwig Museum in the Russian Museum, show works of the 1990s and early 2000s that combine a virtuosity in painting style with the deliberate distortions of the grotesque and surreal. Figures in one painting are often out of proportion with each other; strollers in an ordinary rainy street scene will rise from the earth as if their umbrellas were helicopter blades; carousers stuff themselves with the gusto of Brueghel's peasant feasts; portly ice-skaters do figures that carry them far above the skating pond; five or six faces peer out of each window of a crowded trolley bus. The works are at once sympathetic and humorous portrayals of everyday life and jibes at the seamy sides of Soviet and post-Soviet life. 275 p., 29 cm, approx. 250 color illus., Rus. Item #2740
