St. Petersburg: Borei Art, 2017. Sewn pb. The author as both art critic, curator, and artist for many years was in the thick of unofficial art events in Leningrad / St. Petersburg — underground and apartment exhibitions, performance and protest art. This book is his chronicle of unofficial art in Leningrad and its continuation in the swirl of an incipient free market art scene after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Thanks to Leningrad's / St. Petersburg's distance from government authorities in Moscow and its tradition as a city of museums and a museum-city it was natural that it became a hotbed of dissenting art. Khlobystin amasses material for the recent history of Soviet / Russian art; some of the artistic events and the art itself may be of an ephemeral nature; some may have permanent significance in the history of art — the polemic goes on, and it is a strength of this book that the author does not claim he has the answer. What is of unquestionable interest is a well-informed participant's record of unofficial art, which in the context of the Soviet period was a daring if oblique form of protest. 502 p., 24 cm, approx. 300 color and b/w illus., Rus.
