Sovremennoe iskusstvo Tatarstana / The Modern Art of Tatarstan

Kazan: Tatarskoe knizhnoe izdatel'stvo, 2005. Sewn cl. This catalogue publishes paintings by artists working in Kazan' and other cities of the Tatar Republic during the late Soviet period and early post-Soviet period. As a group they defy categorization. In their substantive introduction, the authors point out that the Tatar population being mainly Islamic had no tradition of easel painting before the twentieth century. The Russians introduced European painting, and the Kazan Art School (under various names) trained generations of talented artists, and such major figures as Alexander Rodchenko for a time worked there. Painting in a representational vein (though not blandly realistic), the artists published here are distinct mainly for their subjects, which are drawn from local life. Costume, architecture, vegetation, and activities all characterize the colorful realities of a southern Asian Islamic region. The large format and Italian printing convery the art forcefully. 383 p., 33 cm, approx. 350 color illus., Rus., Tartar, and ENGLISH. Item #2790
