St. Petersburg: KGallery, 2017. Sewn pb. After being inspired by Disney in the mid 1930s Fedor Khitruk established himself as a first-rate animator at the main USSR animation studio Soyuzmultfilm. His first film as director came much later in 1961 and is considered a classic of Soviet animated movies: “History of a Crime” manages to combine W. C. Fields's dark humor with Dostoevskii's pathos for the transgressor as a series of nightmarish but comical interruptions deprives a simple bookkeeper of sleep and drives him to a criminal rage as the building caretakers (dvorniki) prank and cackle under his window at dawn. Other movies directed by Khitruk such as "Icharus and the Wise Men" have a dark theme amid the madcap fun. This catalogue of a gallery exhibition publishes images from movies Khitruk directed working with various artists at Soyuzmultfilm. Illustrations come from Naum Kleiman's Cinema Museum (Muzei kino) in Moscow, to which Khitruk donated his archive. The exhibition honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of the artist. 215 p., 23 x 25 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. Item #2798
