This catalogue of the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg begins with a facsimile of the first illustrated edition of Blok’s poem on the 1917 revolution “The Twelve” in which Iurii Annenkov’s illustrations capture the gritty heroes of the revolution, the new types of Soviet life. The second section publishes responses to Blok’s poem, its revolutionary and mystical imagery. The third section publishes editions of the poem published throughout the twentieth century which give something like an overview of book art in the Soviet Union and Russia from Annenkov’s 1919 illustrations to Alexander Traugot’s equally forceful but stylistically antithetical drawings for the edition of 2001. 301 p., approx. 150 color and b/w illus., Rus.
