Arkhitektura peterburgskogo moderna: osobniaki i dokhodnye doma (Art Nouveau [Modern] Architecture of Petersburg: Mansions and Apartment Buildings)

St. Petersburg: Kolo, 2017 (1st ed. 2006). Sewn cl. In this volume on the style that had parallels with the Arts and Crafts movement in England, Art Nouveau in France, Jugendstil in Germany, and National Romanticism in Sweden and Finland, the author notes how modern or art nouveau coincided in Russia with the symbolist movement and, like the symbolists, art nouveau designers and architects sought the synthesis of arts, often working with painters and sculptors. Like their Western European counterparts they selected natural materials, brought out the color and texture of different stones, and frequently incorporated animal and plant motifs, making their buildings unique for their decorativeness and freedom from historical precedents. The author analyzes over fifty works in St. Petersburg, pointing out the distinct traits of the northern style and identifying its main successes. 572 pp., 6 x 9 ins., approx. 500 b-&-w illus. and line drawings, sewn cl., Rus.
