Chelnokov was a talented amateur photographer who did a range of material: documentary shots such as pictures of corpses lying on the street during the uprisings of 1905 and wounded soldiers during the Russo-Japanese war; striking portraits and painterly landscapes shot the in Western Europe and Russia, and autochromes of rustic scenes. Chelnokov came from the merchant class, and his family was politically active, which led to his hasty emigration after the November 1917 revolution.
