Plakaty Velikoi Otechestvennoi (Posters of the Great War for the Fatherland)

Moscow: Kontakt-kul'tura, 2014. Sewn cl. Graphic art during the The Great Fatherland War (World War II) was instrumental in boosting the morale of civilian population. Concentrating the country's emotions on hatred of Hitler and making defeat unthinkable, the artists created dramatic images that show the forcefulness of posters as political tools. The posters kindled patriotism and conveyed the optimistic message that victory was ahead, that the Red Army would avenge the crimes of the fascist invaders. Many are typical of folk prints (lubok) in their pithy messages and garish sometimes grotesque imagery. It was also probably the only time in the USSR's history when propaganda posters showed American, British, and Soviet flags side by side. As works of poster art these examples from the war years are in a realistic style (except for the grotesque caricatures of the Nazi leaders) to convey state policy in imagery; a few exhibit such as El Lisitskii exhibit the imaginative graphics of early Soviet posters; others are in a Socialist Realist style. 191 p., approx. 180 color illus., Rus.
