The albums of drawings by amateur artists compiled during the blockade of Leningrad constitute spontaneous and forceful visual chronicle. Those by children are among the strongest as this album from the collection of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg shows. Among the naive images are a mother supine bayoneted by a Nazi soldier lying among her children, skies swarming with fierce shapes of German planes taking on dragonlike proportions, and Soviet tanks and infantry on the attack. Already in blockaded Leningrad Elizaveta L. Shchukina, inspector of Leningrad kindergartens and schools, began collecting the drawings and exhibiting them from on her own in various places. She requested teachers and nannies to ask for drawings at schools and at children’s homes formed in haste for those whose families were decimated. The drawings were both a conscious attempt to record the war as seen through children’s eyes and a way of treating the apathy and shock of the children, many of whom had lost relatives and were coping to boot with hunger and cold. 318 p., approx. 300 color illus., Rus.
