Western European Painting of the Fourteenth to the Early Twentieth Centuries in the Hermitage Collection

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2018. Sewn cl. Anthologies are sometimes assumed to be popular editions for amateurs. This anthology of the Hermitage’s collection of Western European painting has the distinction of including serious art-historical commentary by the museum’s curator, who has been researching Western art in the Hermitage’s collection for some five decades. He puts the works in the context of the time, relates them to other periods, and identifies their place in each individual artist’s oeuvre. The introduction outlines the main stages of building the collection from Catherine the Great’s purchase of 250 paintings in 1764 to works acquired in recent years such as Armand Hammer’s donation of a work by Goya. Among the artists collected originally by Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov are Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Pissarro, Cézanne, Gaughin, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Denis, Marquet, Vlaminck, Derain, Picasso, and Matisse. 295 p., approx. 300 color illus., ENGLISH.
