St. Petersburg: Herm, 2018. Sewn cl. These examples of books, journals, almanacs, and albums illustrated (sometimes designed and composed) by artists usually known for their work in other genres — František Kupka, Sonia Delaunay, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Alphonse Mucha, Raoul Dufy, André Derain, Henri Matisse, for example — display an area where fine art and decorative art become indistinguishable. If the purpose of the book is to impart information, the illustrations are decorative enhancements. If its purpose is aesthetic, the illustrations are the main thing. The authors raise these questions and others about a style arising in the first half of the twentieth century which is frequently used in architecture, applied arts, and costume design, but which also inspired works of book art — at the Exposition international des arts décoratifs et industriel moderns (which gives us the term "art deco") a separate pavilion was devoted to books. The authors and curators point out the unusual aspects of the books exhibited and establish connections with the history of book art in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This Hermitage exhibition catalogue publishes examples from over sixty editions of book art originating in France by French artists and those from other countries ( e.g., Alexander Andreev, Iurii Annenkov). 399 p., approx. 600 color illus., Rus. with title page and summary in ENGLISH.
