The collector who built this collection was the Russian ambassador to Greece in the 1870s, when a chance occurrence, the robbery of a necropolis, saturated the art market with ancient terra-cottas. Saburov had a reputation among professional scholars and archeologists as a knowledgeable collector, and technical analysis in the Hermitage’s preservation and conservation laboratory has established the authenticity of the works from his collection, which he sold to the Hermitage in the 1880s. Nicely photographed and printed, the works in the first section demonstrate the form and texture of sculptures created from sixth century to the fourth b.c. The next section catalogues works of the Hellenic and Roman periods which show the widening interest of sculptors: besides mythological and solitary figures groups appear, such as a mother and child, two women, etc. Appendices outline techniques for making ancient terracottas and reproduce images and charts from the Hermitage preservation and conservation laboratory.
